Charmed (Reboot) – Season 3, Episode 15 (Schrodinger’s Future)

The episode has Macy and Maggie travel to a bleak future.

The episode kicks off with a pregnant Mel trying to meditate, reading her baby books and snacking, fully embracing her sudden pregnancy. Meanwhile, Harry and Macy are on a morning run and Maggie is trying to trigger a premonition, which she manages to do so, seeing the bleak future Mel’s future self described.

To keep Mel and her future baby safe, Macy and Maggie decide to go to the future to find out what’s going on. Meanwhile, due to Georgie’s soul donation, Harry is regressing and behaving like a child. Celeste gives Macy and Mel her watch, and Macy gives Celeste an earbug so they can communicate with each other, Celeste then casts a spell to send them five years into the future.

When they arrive at Safe Space in 2026 they find no-one around, but they do find a circle of volcanic salts and lavender, indicating it’s where future Mel cast her own spell to travel to the past. They eventually find Abigael, who tells them that Maggie is dead. Abigael explains that she had to kill Maggie as she was infected with a magical plague, which future Mel refers to as the ‘Whispering Evil’. The Whispering Evil infects people by going into their brains and hijacking the worse parts of them, Abigael is part of a resistance, and future Mel is working on a cure.

When the Whispering Evil shows up at Safe Space and kills Abigael, Macy and Mel run back to the Manor, realising that the Perfecti’s warning of a bigger threat was for the Whispering Evil. At the Manor, Macy finds her spare earbugs after their first pair are broken by Abigael’s alarm system at Safe Space, and Maggie finds and shrinks future Mel’s notes in the attic. Macy and Maggie also have to deal with Celeste’s watch breaking. Luckily for them, Celeste has a replacement cog, which she has Harry leave in a specific spot in the past for them to find in the future. Meanwhile, Mel and Ruby brew temporal tea to prevent Macy and Maggie from rapidly ageing when they return, however once Celeste learns the watch is broken, she asks them to make more brew in a shorter time. Ruby doses herself with an acceleration potion to help them meet the deadline, which works, however Ruby collapses due to the toll it takes on her health and her body overheating. Mel uses her powers to cool her down and she recovers.

Macy and Maggie eventually discover that future Macy has been infected with the Whispering Evil and is infecting people. Future Macy chases them throughout Seattle and just as they are backed into a corner, they find the replacement cog, repair the watch and go back to the present. When they return, they find that they’ve rapidly aged, but Mel and Ruby have finished the tea and Celeste gives it to them.

From Mel’s notes, the sisters discover that they have three weeks to stop the Whispering Evil from infecting the entire world. Mel also shows Macy and Maggie that carrying the baby has rid her of the magical allergy, and could be the key to curing the allergy for all of them.

Towards the end of the episode, Celeste goes back to Mykonos. In the final moments of the episode, the Whispering Evil can be seen looking at the Seattle skyline in the distance, ready to attack the city.

Overall I didn’t feel that this was the strongest episode, however I did appreciate the different elements in this episode that haven’t been seen before. I found Harry’s regression through childhood and teenage years, and reaching young adulthood, with Celeste having to play a maternal role, hilarious. I also found it interesting that the writers’ chose to have Harry regress but also be aware of what’s going on around him. I also appreciated the split screens showing Harry placing the cog for Macy and Maggie to find in the present, with Macy and Maggie finding it in the future. There were a couple of weak points in the writing, specifically the lack of explanations on how and why Mel’s future baby cured the magical allergy, and why future Macy was chasing her present self and Maggie. Sure she was infected, but it wasn’t explained what is going on in her brain to drive her to behave like this towards herself and her sister once was she was infected.

It will be interesting to see who is the Whispering Evil in the present day.

Stray Observations:

-Macy makes plans when she’s stressed.

Best one liners and interactions:

  • “I forgot how utterly exhausting it is to be mortal.” (Harry to Macy)
  • “You’re the only person I know who’s good news is a box of bugs!” (Maggie to Macy on Macy’s spare earbugs)
